What is EVAPORATOR PLANT ?

For production of fresh water Large ships usually carry evaporating plants.  
Steam ships must be able to produce high-quality distillate in order to maintain boiler-water levels.

Diesel-engined ships often utilise waste heat as an energy source for producing fresh water. In this system, the engine-cooling water is passed through a heat exchanger, where it is cooled by concentrated seawater (brine). Because the cooling water (which is chemically treated fresh water) is at a temperature of 70–80 °C (158–176 °F), it would not be possible to flash off any water vapour unless the pressure in the heat exchanger vessel was dropped. To alleviate this problem, a brine-air ejector venturi pump is used to create a vacuum inside the vessel. Partial evaporation is achieved, and the vapour passes through a demister before reaching the condenser section. Seawater is pumped through the condenser section to cool the vapour sufficiently to precipitate it. The distillate gathers in a tray, from where it is pumped to the storage tanks. A salinometer monitors salt content and diverts the flow of distillate from the storage tanks if the salt content exceeds the alarm limit. Sterilisation is carried out after the evaporator.

Evaporators are usually of the shell-and-tube type (known as an Atlas Plant) or of the plate type (such as the type designed by Alfa Laval). Temperature, production and vacuum are controlled by regulating the system valves. Seawater temperature can interfere with production, as can fluctuations in engine load. For this reason, the evaporator is adjusted as seawater temperature changes and shut down altogether when the ship is manoeuvring. An alternative in some vessels, such as naval ships and passenger ships, is the use of the reverse osmosis principle for fresh-water production, instead of using evaporators.

OPERATING PROCESS :-
RXSOL-CC72 neutralizes the acid components of feed water.The proportion of RXSOL-50-5005-20 depends upon the Carbon dioxide content of the condensate. Basically RXSOL-50-5005-20 neutralizes the acid contents & maintains the condensate and feed water in the alkaline condition.  It also protects copper based metals.

Using Procedure: 

RXSOL-50-5005-20 condensate is tested for PH to determine the dosage level. The PH limits are 8.3 - 9.0 . For an average system e. g. 10 M3, the dosage is approximately 0.65 ltr / day .

The necessary amount of RXSOL-50-5005-20 is required or injected as frequently as to maintain the pH of the condensate at the main condensate pump outlet between 8.6-9.5 .  The amines pass over with the steam and have the dual function of elevating the pH of the steam/condensate and putting a protective micro film on the system pipe work. Acidic condensate is the result of carbonic acid (H2CO3) being formed as CO2 is released in the steam.Condensate prevents corrosion by carbonic acid on live systems. Its filming properties also reduce corrosion on shut down lines, when moisture and oxygen are present.

RXSOL-50-5007-020 The objective is to maintain a hydrazine residual between 0.05-0.2 ppm depending on operating pressure and boiler designe. Actual consumption is determined under operating conditions. A normal dosage is approximately 1 ltr. per day, depending of system layout.  The calculated LC50 is 172,891 ppm with a 95% confidence interval of 123,414 ppm and 237,006 ppm.

Powder Application:-

For average conditions the recommended dosage is 0.30 ounces (weight) per cubic foot (28 Liters) of enclosed space.( 300 g/cubic meter) Concentration can be increased to protect metals under more severe conditions. Powder is applied by air fogging or sprinkle and then the treated area is closed or sealed.

Liquid Application:-

For average conditions the recommended dosage as a solution is a 0.25% in water (based upon weight). This solution is recommended as a hydrostatic test fluid or as an additive to a final rinse in metalworking applications. Concentration can be increased to protect metals under more severe conditions. The treated area is then closed or sealed.
 

Hydrazine is a convenient reductant because the by-products are typically nitrogen gas and water. Thus, it is used as an ANTIOXIDANT, an oxygen scavenger, and a corrosion inhibitor in water boilers and heating systems. 

Hydrazine is mainly used as a foaming agent in preparing polymer foams

During the operation, the fins & tubes of the main engine air cooler which become fouled with oil, grease, dust and carbonaceous deposit , which will affect cooler efficiency and damage the system.

Dirt attached on air-side fins of air coolers are a mix of carbonaceous particles such as soot and oil mist of unburned fuel components. 
Carbonaceous particles can be removed by Alkaline Cleaners Part No. RXSOL-16-1040-025 ( www.rxmarine.com/alkaline-air-cooler-cleaner ) and oil mist can be removed by oil based cleaners. However, it is very difficult to remove the mix of these substances. If you use an alkaline cleaner, oil will repel the water based alkaline cleaner; if you use oil based cleaner, carbonaceous particles will get in the way and stop oil from being removed.

This cleaners designed to remove both carbonaceous and oil simultaneously. An effective cleaning method is to immerse one side to remove the loose stains first, and then immerse the other side. This method can efficiently remove dirt and prevent swollen dirt peeled from fins from blocking the spaces between fins.

Dirt in tubes of seawater side

White scales attached on the seawater side of air coolers of many vessels. We found that in most cases, the main component of the scales is calcium carbonate and there is also a small amount of calcium sulfate. Therefore in most cases, if you dissolve the calcium carbonate the scales will be removed.

However, if the amount of scales is large enough to block the tube, the cylindrical scale will usually have calcium carbonate on the outside (the side that is in contact with tube) and calcium sulfate in the center (part that seawater passes through). Calcium sulfate is easier to be formed when the temperature goes higher.

When the amount of scales increases, the contact area of scale and cleaner is very small and a longer time of dissolution is required. Calcium sulfate cannot be dissolved by an acid cleaner.

RXSOL-54-1048-020 ( www.rxmarine.com/safe-acid-descalex-liquid-20-ltr ) is a powerful dissolving agent of calcium carbonate. Therefore, it is better to use RXSOL-54-1048-020  to do circulating cleaning at an early stage before the scales build up and block the tube, or regular cleaning is recommended as well. It is impossible to do a circulating cleaning when the tube is completely blocked.

Hand spray Cleaning: By Hand spray,apply concentrate RXSOL-16-0009-210 all over the cooler coils. for good emulsification &penetration. Allow the RXSOL-16-0009-210 for a minimum of 10 MINUTES then use a high pressu ure  water to  wash  off  the  loosened deposits. During process  always  keep drain valve  open. After satisfactory cleaning, and flushing through with fresh water, close air cooler drains.Note that during this process the engine must be  stopped.

Immersion bath
Atleast for 2 Hrs deep COOLER PARTS in to  AIR COOLER CLEANER emulsion tank. The product should be heated to approx. 50°C and agitation provided with an air line. Then drain off and flush well with water, followed by drying with an air line.

Soak method: Machine parts with stubborn carbon deposits to be cleaned is dipped into conc.Soln.of ACC then allow deposits to. Be broken down and loosened before removal, then rinse .

Circulation method
Some designs of cooler can be circulated "in situ". In this case a pump tank and pipe system is fitted permanently or connections are provided for connecting a temporary circuit. The system should be filled with AIR COOLER CLEANER circulation carried out for 2 - 4 hours at a temperature of upto 50°C. After cleaning the cooler should be thoroughly flushed with fresh water and dried with an air line.

Note: Both cleaning methods benefit from heat of up to 50°C and cleaning times can be reduced or extended dependant on temperature and degree of fouling.

Detailed Technical specification of individual components of chiller

A.    Refrigerant Compressors.

The refirgerant compressors shall be of hermitically sealed scroll type compressors with all standard accessories. The compressors shall be designed for continuous duty for a minimum period of 720  Hours. The approximate time taken by chiller unit for pulling down the intial load from ambient conditions of =40 degree C (maximum) to the designed process condition of - 45 degree C shall be clearly indicated. The refirgeration package shall also be provided with hot gas bypass arrangement ot act as an artificial heat load, during part load operations and also to recover the oil from the evaporator, as and when situation demands. System shall be designed to prevent starving of compressors during continous operations. The compressors shall be suitable for working on 415V, 3 phase, 50 Hz. AC  power supply and the terminal block shall have IP 64 protection. The compressors shall be of reputed make like Copeland, Germany/ Bitzer, Germany/ Dunfoss (Typical).

B.    Inter-stage Condenser.

The inter-stage condenser shall be of shell and tube type or al plate type of pack-less tube in tube type heat exchanger shall be designed and suitably selected with adequate heat transfer area. The heat exchanger shall be suitably thermally insulated with EPDM foam rubber of adequate thickness of class 'O' rating. While selecting the condenser capacity, all non-process side external heat loads like insulation losses, heat capacity of all piping material, pipe fittings, balance tank/ expansion tank etc. shall be adequately considered. These PHEs shall be of reputed make like WTT Germany/ Alfa Laval, Germany/ GEA (Typical)

C.    Water cooled condenser for high-stage refrigerant circuit 

Water cooled condenser to be used in the high side refrigeration circuit shall be of shell and tube type or a plate type or pack-less tube heat exchanger, designer suitably. The water available for cooling in the condenser is chilled water, and is available at a pressure of about 2-3 bar at a temperature of around 20-22 degree C. Adequate protection shall be considered for the chiller system for possible faults like insufficient cooling water flow, low cooling water pressire and high temperature of cooling water. Suitable cooling water pressure/ flow regulator, cooling water flow switch etc. shall be part of the system. The required cooling water flow rate and the temperature differential considered shall be indicated in the offer with all calculations, without fail. These water-cooled condensers shall be of reputed make like Danfos/ Copeland/ Bitzer/ Alfa laval(Typical).

During the operation, the fins & tubes of the main engine air cooler which become fouled with oil, grease, dust and carbonaceous deposit , which will affect cooler efficiency and damage the system.

Application

Immersion bath
Atleast for 2 Hrs deep COOLER PARTS in to  AIR COOLER CLEANER emulsion tank. The product should be heated to approx. 50°C and agitation provided with an air line. Then drain off and flush well with water, followed by drying with an air line.

Circulation method
Some designs of cooler can be circulated "in situ". In this case a pump tank and pipe system is fitted permanently or connections are provided for connecting a temporary circuit. The system should be filled with AIR COOLER CLEANER circulation carried out for 2 - 4 hours at a temperature of upto 50°C. After cleaning the cooler should be thoroughly flushed with fresh water and dried with an air line.

Note: Both cleaning methods benefit from heat of up to 50°C and cleaning times can be reduced or extended dependant on temperature and degree of fouling.

Scaling is caused in membranes because the level of hardness salts in the water becomes highly concentrated as it passes through the RO unit. In smaller units scale formation can be prevented by base exchange softening the make-up water but for larger systems that is very expensive. We have developed a range of easy to handle, cost-effective RO Antiscalant which increase the solubility of the hardness salts so they remain in solution rather than forming scale on the membrane. Our cost-effective RO antiscalants will inhibit a wide range of foulants including calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, barium sulphate, strontium sulphate, calcium fluoride, silica and iron.

RO Antiscalants are dosed directly to the RO feed water tank or feedwater line (after pretreatment) at the recommended dosage of 1-3 mg/L and maximum dosage at 8mg/L, subject to inlet water quality and parameters is respect of Calcium Hardness, Iron, TDS, Alkalinity, pH and silica content. Directions for Use and Dose Rates

RXSOL-20-2027-025 is  specially formulated for cleaning double bottom, deep and wing tanks etc, used for fuel oils. It can also be used for local cleaning and degreasing of engine rooms and on deck.

Soak Method

for heavy soil put parts into undiluted RXSOL-20-2027-025, for general soiling use a solution of 10-30% RXSOL-20-2027-025 in water. Parts should be soaked for at least 30 minutes before washing off with water.

Spraying Method

Use neat RXSOL-20-2027-025 over all soiled areas. Allow 10-20 minutes for reaction , then rinse with high pressure water hose., Scrubbing will assist the cleaning operation  for stubborn deposits.

Rock and Roll Method

Recommended time to clean and gas-free under normal circumstances would be 3-6 days ,for cleaning of double bottom tanks at sea.
1) First of all  heat the remaining oil in tanks .
2)By stripping constantly. flush the tank with sea water, 
3) Close  all suction and discharge valves .
4) 1st  Dose  Fill the tanks by ½ to 1 litre RXSOL-20-2027-025 per tone of     water   through pipe or manhole , for  75-80% of capacity of tank to be cleaned.
5) Then fill tank to 25% capacity with sea water, raise the temperature up to 60°C maximum, and maintain this temperature for 24 hours.
6) Top up tank to 75-80% capacity with sea water, continue to heat for 48 to 72 hours.
7) Discharge and strip tank. Fill to 50-60% capacity with sea water and allow 2 hours rinsing time.
8) Discharge tank and strip, flushing tank with sea water for 2 hours,stripping continuously. When completed, inspect tank to ascertain if second cleaning is required. If so:
9) For completion add second dose of RXSOL-20-2027-025, fill tank with sea water 75-80% capacity and raise the temperature to 60°C maximum. Maintain this for 48 to 72 hours. And recirculate the solution .
10) Discharge and strip tank, flush with sea water, stripping continuously for 2 hours.
11) To gas-free, fill tank with sea water to overflow through vents and sounding pipes, discharge and strip completely.

Note:

General formulation to calculate  how much bleach is needed to add to a tank or a pipeline to disinfect it to a given chlorine residual using a given disinfectant. Usually someone wants to know how to meet an AWWA Standard (like C651-92, Disinfection of Water Mains). The equation below should be used to estimate the amount of sodium / Calcium hypochlorite (Chlorine Water is 6.00% sodium hypochlorite) needed to disinfect a given quantity of water to a desired chlorine concentration.

SKIN:

Remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, have trained person administer oxygen. If respiration stops, give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY.

INGESTION:

           NEVER GIVE ANYTHING BY MOUTH TO AN UNCONSCIOUS PERSON. If swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Give large quantities of milk or gelatin solution. If these are not available give large quantities of water. If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep airway clear and give more milk, gelatin solution or water, GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. Avoid vomiting, lavages or acidic antidotes. NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: Sodium Hypochlorite is an alkaline corrosive. For exposure by ingestion do not use emesis, lavages or acidic antidotes. Dilute immediately by giving milk, melted ice cream, beaten egg white, starch paste or antacids such as milk magnesia. Aluminum hydroxide gel or magnesium trisilicate gel. Avoid sodium bicarbonate because of  carbon di-oxide release. Sodium thiosulphate solution may prove beneficial by reducing unreacted material

for HANDYMAX  (5 Holds) : In general  500 Ltr to 1000 Ltr   RXSOL-22-2210-210 require to cover area up to 12 mtrs , i.e approx 1/2 drum to 1 drum of material is sufficient for each hold , while
for PANAMAX    (7 Holds) : In general 1000 Ltr to 2000 Ltrs RXSOL-22-2210-210 require to cover full area. , i.e approx 3/4 drum to 1.25 drums of material is sufficient for each hold.

Ref our telcon, please find attached Hold photos after discharging of Australian Coal and cleaning (without applying any chemicals) in oct 2018 . Then vsl loaded Indonesian Coal and will be discharging same in abt a week. Next voyage is getting fixed to load Urea from Saudi. Basis the photos, which chemical would you suggest to be used. We were thinking of RXSOL PCS along with Aquatuff. Fyi, Owners have supplied 1200 Ltrs of Aquatuff HF last month.

In image we can observe that BOTTOM line of hold is rusted, And your plan to load CLEAN CARGO like urea which is ammonia-ted product can result further heavy rusting. So here our suggestion is to go with PCS with Aquatuff HF. And after cleaning hold rust can be treated with RUST CONVERTOR by the ratio of 1:100 Ltr with water, this will change free iron rust content to orginal metal colour. ( For treatment of rust Each Hold  maximum 50 Ltr RUST CONVERTOR REQUIRED ) and Finally HOLD can be treat with SLIP COAT polymer, with dilution ration of 1:100 Ltr with Water. ( For Each Hold polymer coating  maximum 50 Ltr Slip Coat REQUIRED )

Granular: Granular is the preferred option for filling trenches where the conductor is covered with Bentonite and then water poured over and mixed in the trench.

 

Powder: Powder is the preferred method for pouring into bore holes to en-sure the mixture is of a thin enough consistency to reach the bottom of the bore hole. If diamond drilling is required for deep holes, possible 40m depths and deeper and the Bentonite is to be pumped through the core in to the hole, then powder would be the preferred option.

The correct dosage rate is dependant upon several parameters, including feed temperature, pH, and chemical analysis and will be specified by your VWS consultant after a detailed survey of your plant. To obtain the best results, Antiscalant 9209 RX should be added continuously using a suitable metering pump.
In general PRACTICE :
Antiscalant 9209 RX should be dosed continuously to the feed water upstream of the cartridge filters. Typical dosage rates are 2 – 4 mg/L.
Antiscalant 9209 RX may also be used in sea water applications where iron is present, recycle of brine is in use or there is no feed water pH reduction by acid dosing.

Typical dose rates are 0.5 – 1.0 mg/L
Antiscalant 9209 RX dose rate in the feed water should be less than 5 mg/L in potable water systems. 
Antiscalant 9209 RX can be diluted and is fully miscible with water in all proportions.

Note: 

Antiscalant 9209 RX  is an aqueous solution of neutralised phosphonic acid. It has been approved for use in potable water applications and does not contribute to assimilable organic carbon (AOC), which can act as source of nutrient for micro-organisms.

Good Advice Apply RXSOL-41-4148-010 on WET surface only, Do not let dry the product on surfaces without rinsing.  Every machine is different. Basically, pour liquified descaler ( powder with water premixed ) into the water box. If your truckmount has a bypass orifice remove it and replace the plug or cap on the manifold.

Using Procedure: 

Inhibitor protects truck mount components.

First of all mix 1 Kg powder with 4 Ltr water to get powder dissolve completely in to the BUCKET. Then disconnect truck mount water inlet and solution outlet hoses. Drain water completely from water box, Then add 4 Ltr powder mixed water into water box to dissolve. Then start engine to run solution through truck mount  atleast for 15 minutes to dissolve scale from surface. Finally connect water inlet hose and solution hose, flush with water for 5 minutes. Add 250ml of Alkali Cleaner RXSOL ORG - 6 to water box and run for 2 to 5 minutes to neutralise residual of scale ion. Then circulate system with clear water to remove all loose particle as well as cleaner present inside the system. 

 

Note For heavy scale build-up Truck Mount Descaler may be diluted with mix 1.5 Kg powder with 4 Ltr water and the solution should be circulated for a longer period.

Technical Capabilities:
Available scale inhibiting chemicals are effective at preventing mineral deposits caused by compounds such as calcium carbonate, strontium sulfate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, iron sulfide and iron oxide. Selection of the appropriate scale inhibitor and dose will include water testing to identify the types and concentrations of scale forming compounds present in the water. For example, phosphonate-based scale inhibitors are effective at preventing carbonate and sulfate scales whereas, polymer-base scale inhibitors are effective for sulfate/carbonate scales of barium, strontium and calcium.

Technical Limitations:
The amount of scale that will precipitate out of water is dependent of temperature, pressure, water incompatibility and mineral content. Polyaspartic acid is a manufactured amino polycarboxylic acid that can function as a scale inhibitor, corrosion inhibitor, dispersant, chelation agent, and water absorber. According to the manufacturer, polyaspartic acid is non-toxic, biodegradable, and non-polluting.

Costs:
Because the amount and type of scale that can precipitate out of water is dependent on many factors, a cost associated with application is variable. However, the volume of application is low relative to the overall composition of water for fracture treatment. For example, approximately 0.08% or 0.043% of fracture water in the Marcellus Basin and Fayetteville respectively, is composed of scale inhibiting chemicals.

RXSOL Altreat 400 scale inhibitor is a polycarboxylic acid that controls inorganic scale formation. Small amounts of this copolymer, based on maleic acid, effectively handles large quantities of dissolved salts, thus preventing precipitation,settling and baking onto heat transfer surfaces. RXSOL Altreat 400 also impairs crystal growth, modifying the crystal structure to create a soft sludge byproduct that does not adhere to heat transfer surfaces.RXSOL Altreat 400 readily dissolves in any type of water. Charge Instructions:
HEAT EXCHANGER CLEANER is used as delivered at ambient temperatures. If time is not a factor in the clean out, the solution can be diluted up to 50% with water.

Charge details:
1) If used at the 50% dilution: Fill the clean tank approximately ½ full with fresh water.
2) Set valves to proper setting for clean out
3) Plumb the circulating system to the correct side of the heat exchanger Turn on.
4) Slowly add 1 gallon of HEAT EXCHANGER CLEANER for every two gallons of  bath (or use the HEAT EXCHANGER CLEANER neat)
5) Allow to circulate for at least ½ hour dependent on sludge.
6) Turn off pump and disconnect plumbing from heat exchanger
7) Flush heat changer with fresh water to remove residual acid.
8) Turn heat exchanger valves back to running positions.
It is important to circulate the solution through the heat exchanger for at least 30 minutes. The cleaning time will vary depending on the amount and type of sludge build-up. After the heat exchanger is cleaned, it is highly recommended that the  unit  be  flushed with water. If this step is not taken, an increase in the free acid of the operating phosphate solution might occur.

• Burette Assembly
• 5-ml pipette and bulb
• 250-ml flask or beaker
• 100 ml graduated cylinder

Reagents needed:::
• Bromophenol Blue indicator
• 1.0N Sodium Hydroxide

Free Acid Procedure:
1. Using a pipette, pipette 5-ml of your solution into a 100-ml graduated cylinder. Fill the cylinder to the 100 ml mark with DI or RO water, then mix by up ending 2-3 times.

2. Pipette 5 ml of the above dilution to a beaker or flask; add 4-5 drops of Bromophenol Blue indicator. Then add 1.0N Sodium Hydroxide drop-wise until the
solution changes from yellow to blue. Record the number of mls as points of Free Acid.

The concentration is calculated by multiplying the points of Free Acid times the HEAT EXCHANGER CLEANER factor 0.59. This equals the concentration in percent by volume
of HEAT EXCHANGER CLEANER in solution. Points of Free Acid X 59 = Percent by volume of HEAT EXCHANGER CLEANER

HEDP is used as chelating agent. The dosage of 1-10mg/L is preferred as scale inhibitor, 10-50mg/L as corrosion inhibitor, and 1000-2000mg/L as detergent. Usually, HEDP is used together with polycarboxylic acid. It is used as a strong chelating agent for metal ions like Ca, Mg & Fe in water treatment, textile applications. Its efficient inhibition for CaCO3 & CaSO4 alone or in combination with low molecular weight polymers. Very effective in protecting metal corrosion. HEDP also having very strong chlorine stability.
